I’ve always had a thing for the 90s. I’ve referenced the music, movies, etc. in other entries, but my love for the 90s has more to do with a feeling more than any specific form of entertainment. That decade felt/feels like magic to me. The last great decade before technology started manufacturing talent, directions, style, feelings, and connection just by clicking a few buttons. Looking, sounding, and thinking differently was celebrated across most mediums. Creating something extraordinary meant the creators carried a real edge and fearlessness to try something new. What does it mean to be relevant when everyone is relevant? Access was limited. People were less afraid to be weird.
Ideas came from books, movies, conversations, boredom. Connection required intentional effort—asking for a phone number, calling the phone number, maybe leaving a voicemail if nobody answered, and then just waiting. Delayed gratification. Work was left at the workplace. Home was for home. Focus was still a luxury, but more like a quiet luxury. Life seemed simpler.
Relative to the time, problems were probably considered just as difficult and cumbersome as the ones we’re dealing with today. But also, were they?
